With great humor, tenderness and insight, Bridget Cook will open you to thought-provoking and healing ways of handling your own family history — skeletons or no, and how to leave a legacy of love. Don’t miss the banquet Friday night — delicious food, amazing entertainment and a signed copy of her national bestselling book, Shattered Silence. Tickets are selling fast! Sign up today!

Overland Park Convention Center
6000 College Blvd
Overland Park, Kansas – 66211

Bridget’s passion for writing and storytelling began right here in Colorado several years ago, as a young mother volunteering with the Colorado Committee for Woman’s History! Writing true stories of tremendous character became her passion after researching and writing about the women during Colorado Woman’s Suffrage and celebrating Colorado as the first state to give women the right to vote! In doing so, she discovered the circumstances and the women surrounding the Meeker Massacre and the last Ute uprising. Since her long stint in Colorado, Bridget has gone on to write some tremendously compelling biographies which have been seen worldwide on Oprah, Dr. Phil, 20/20, CNN, Good Morning America, in People Magazine as well as other media throughout the globe.

More Info…

Like the descendants of Jesse James generations after the fact, it can almost seem illustrious, if not humorous, to have a few dishonorable members ‘hanging’ closeted in the branches of our family tree. Some people search all their genealogical lives to find a skeleton! They honestly don’t need a lot of help in handling or healing those black sheep, because usually they’ve long passed, and the repercussions have passed as well.

However, it can be very sensitive if those skeletons have a little more flesh on them – great grandparents, grandparents or even more recent ancestors, descendants and extended family members. So, what do you do with them? Do you tell the truth? Do you ignore the details and the hushed family whispers and hope they will go away? Do you SLAM the closet door shut, never to open until you’re long gone and someone else down the line is conducting research? Come to the dinner to find out. Whether it’s for you, a spouse or a friend, this forum will present eye-opening information on the human condition — and what you can do to leave a legacy of love for your own family.

Everybody’s got them—although not everyone wants to claim them… The Unspeakables. Like the descendants of Jesse James generations after the fact, it can almost seem illustrious, if not humorous, to have a few dishonorable members ‘hanging’ closeted in the branches of our family tree. However, it can be very sensitive if those skeletons have a little more flesh on them – great grandparents, grandparents or even more recent ancestors and extended family members. So, what do you do with them? Do you tell the truth? Do you ignore the details and the hushed family whispers and hope they will go away? Do you SLAM the closet door shut, never to open until you’re long gone and someone else down the line is conducting research?

M. Bridget Cook, transformational speaker and national best-selling author will share with us hair-raising, yet healing stories from her works that have been featured on Oprah, other major media, and have gained incredible international exposure in the last 12 months. She will also provide valuable tips and insightful techniques for handling, and truly even healing, the skeletons in your family history.

Always curious and awed by the extremes of human behavior, Bridget Cook authored national best-selling Shattered Silence, the Untold Story of a Serial Killer’s Daughter (Sweetwater Books, Cedar Fort 2009) with Melissa G. Moore, daughter of the infamous Happy Face serial murderer. Despite its title, this book has been inspiring millions of people and has been featured on Oprah, Dr. Phil, Good Morning America, 20/20, People Magazine, E! Animal Planet, In Touch Magazine and in other prominent news leaders throughout the world.

Also the author of Skinhead Confessions: From Hate to Hope (Sweetwater Books, Cedar Fort 2008) with former high-ranking, neo-Nazi skinhead leader TJ Leyden, the book and its message now turn thousands away from gangs as TJ works together with universities, law enforcement and military to educate youth and adults alike on the dangers of gang activity and extremist groups. TJ and their book, Skinhead Confessions has recently appeared on Dr. Phil, The History Channel’s Gangland Series, and CNN. TJ often makes regular appearances on CNN and NPR as a national pundit for tolerance and peace activism.

Currently working on Holocaust survivor stories, Bridget continues to delve into the inner workings of families who have suffered tremendously horrifying situations, and yet have triumphed over their circumstances. In addition to her motivational speeches and workshops, Bridget is also a dynamic business leader and entrepreneur. Her incredible energy has led her on a diverse path of business, publishing, humanitarian, genealogy, and even social work as a tracker and mentor for troubled and gang-related youth in Colorado. Having an authentic interest and flair for writing family histories and conducting research, Cook has also been a staff member on Everton’s Genealogical Helper and also The Handybook for Genealogists (Tenth Edition) and currently owns three businesses. The delighted mother of three creative children, her other greatest passion lies in discovering and sharing the dynamic possibilities of each human soul – healing those alive, and even those buried deep inside the family closet!

What an amazing month! First we find out that Oprah is running the segment with Melissa and Dr. Phil for the second time in a quarter on Thursday, which was unbelievable and exciting. Then we found out the day before that Good Morning America aired the segment they had done! If you would like to see it, it’s really well done. I was incredibly pleased:

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Books/read-excerpt-shattered-silence-melissa-moore/story?id=8791871

In the meantime, Cedar Fort has been running ads here in Utah over several major radio stations, so I have set up several book signings with local Barnes and Nobles and some Borders stores. The schedule is as follows, for anyone that wants to stop by, and there’s some more coming up in January:
December 12, Book Signing, Barnes & Noble, Murray, 2-4pm
December 12, Book Signing, Barnes & Noble, Layton, 5-7pm
December 8, Book Signing Barnes & Noble, Sandy, 7-9pm
December 19, Booksigning, Borders, Logan, 3-5pm

I look forward to seeing you there!

Everyone has an incredible story… we just haven’t all discovered them yet. However, when we do, they are something that drives us, compels and inspires us to BE all of who we are. It’s an amazing transformation that most of us come to at some point of choice in our lives. Sometimes this comes in a moment of soft introspection. However, for others it is a result of realizing that “Enough is enough is enough!” and we choose to step out of whatever drama we previously created (or may have been created for us) and to decide to live another way.

These are the stories of dynamic change that you have brought to me in the last two months. I have been inspired by more than 47 people who have written, called and amazed me with your stories. Most of you that contacted me have survived horrendous ordeals, and finally thrived when you decided to take life literally by the horns and begin to live from a different space than you ever have before. Now that is transformation. That is what I know is possible. That is what inspires me… and I feel is beginning to inspire an entire nation. We are getting tired of the blackness that seems to permeate society. We are done with the crime, with the hopelessness we feel when we watch the news. We are ready to take life on –whatever demons we must face within ourselves and within society to be able to finally live!

People who have read Shattered Silence and Skinhead Confessions realize the style of writing that I do is about these transformational stories. It’s not about the salacious details of true crime, or victimizing more people. Far be it. This is about revealing truth of human conditions, and realizing that we are divine and as such are given tools and resources and incredible spirits to be able to rise ABOVE the drama, the abuse, and the old stories to create a new one–our own rebirth into a new life of accountability and contribution. To me it goes even deeper. Like Melissa and TJ, to be able to Create a Life On Purpose, one of joy, of healing, of light… and yes, even of peace.

So, I thank you for having the courage to share your stories with me. Thank you for having the courage to speak your truth. Thank you for having the courage to change, and be an amazing ripple into your families, your neighborhoods, your communities and your nations. Around the world, you ARE making a difference. And I’m overjoyed to hear from you everyday, in honor and gratitude. Keep it coming!

Please subscibe to my rss feed to be notified of upcoming writings and events.

At some point in the last few months as people have asked how I am doing or what I’m up to, I’ve decided to quit saying ‘busy’ as part of my replies. Busy as in “too busy’ or even “crazy busy” just doesn’t account for — nor give thanks for — the miracles that are happening right and left. (I’d like to respond, “Fanfreakingtastic!” but since I had an absurd aversion to the word ‘freaking’ for so long, my daughters wouldn’t let me live that one down. That’s a whole ‘nother story…)

“Crazy-wonderful” however, seems to succinctly put it all into perspective. Wonderful, as in ‘filled with wonder’ is definitely in the miraculous category, and crazy added would definitely sum it all up! Melissa Moore, myself, and our book, Shattered Silence, the Untold Story of a Serial Killer’s Daughter have been on an incredible journey. Released September 8, the book has had a whirlwind tour, beginning with Oprah (and special appearance by Dr. Phil), a four-page article in People Magazine, and another interview with Melissa is supposed to air this coming Friday on Good Morning America! In addition to numerous columns, reviews and newspaper articles, this is nothing short of crazy-wonderful, and every day I wake up in total gratitude.

Melissa’s courage has sparked incredible response from readers and viewers from across the nation, Canada, and the world. People are writing to Melissa every day, thanking her for telling her story. Some people’s personal journeys, like Melissa’s, are heart-wrenching. What brings tears to my eyes is hearing how they are able to move forward because of the message Shattered Silence brings them. We’ve now even had therapists tell us that their clients are referring them to read the book! Crazy. Wonderful. Crazy-wonderful. Amen.
